Mindy Meng Wang

I met Mindy at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club. She came to a gig and introduced herself, and I thought she was incredibly interesting. A Chinese woman that plays a traditional Chinese instrument with a deep interest in contemporary music. For me, that's interesting.

Mindy is a great networker. She's a real go-getter. She's everywhere talking to people, and making things happen. She works with the MSO and then she’s making electronica, creating interesting shows about her life and her childhood and working with interesting collaborators. Mindy is ambitious and extremely creative. An incredible musician.

You can't help but like Mindy because she's very, very good at what she does. She's very open minded. She's very driven. But when we're playing together, she's incredibly focused. There's nothing else happening but the music. And I really admire that about her. And the other thing I love about the relationship is, I don't know how old Mindy is, but I'm probably old enough to be her father, from a generational point of view. But we've got such a great sort of collegiate relationship that there doesn't feel like there's any kind of age gap between us. It's just two friends who really enjoy playing music. I've just been fascinated to hear her stories about growing up in China and meeting her family. I just feel like I'm one of many people in her life. She's got a cast of thousands, but I think what we do is pretty special.
