Spring, Flower, Snow and the Moon
Paul Grabowsky and Mindy Meng Wang
A brave, honest moment that will take you on an emotional journey.
Spring, Flower, Snow and the Moon is a phrase from a 10th century Chinese poem, reflecting upon the natural and beautiful things in life. Just like this concert, it’s a conversation about profound memories and feelings. A brave, honest moment that will take you on an emotional journey.
In a performance that crosses cultural and musical boundaries, Chinese-Australian composer, performer and pioneer of modern guzheng music, Mindy Meng Wang joins distinguished jazz artist and multi-award-winning Australian composer and pianist, Paul Grabowsky AO, for a truly unique musical exploration.
Considered one of the world’s leading guzheng instrumentalists, Wang produces evocative, experimental arrangements, which meld beautifully with the astute piano work of her artistic partner, eight-time ARIA winner and two-time Helpmann Award recipient, Grabowsky.
Born and classically trained in China, Mindy studied Western Musicology in the UK before migrating to Australia. Excelling in experimental music and improvisation, she is pioneering a new sonic direction for the guzheng. Paul Grabowsky is a pianist, composer, arranger, conductor, with a reputation as one of Australia’s most distinguished jazz artists and renowned collaborator.
Their performance offers an intimate listening experience, exploring life and shared emotions. Mindy and Paul started collaborating in early 2021 and immediately found a special connection in music. Using the uncommon combination of guzheng and piano, their melodies dance effortlessly to produce a hauntingly beautiful sound. In their performances, audiences are taken on a poignant musical journey into the fertile space that exists between Chinese folk music and contemporary jazz practice. Together, these two consummate musicians create a rich and dynamic sonic fusion, drawing from a diverse range of musical influences to unite elements of traditional Taiwanese and Chinese music with the classical touch of impressionist piano.
“The two instruments encircle each other in a beguiling call and response, eventually so entwined that there is only their shared song.”
